Making humanitarian aid more effective through technological innovation

Sustainability & transparency in humanitarian aid are more important than ever before …

We believe that reliable traceability and transparent auditing is a requirement, and therefore not an option in humanitarian aid. To ensure that 100% of humanitarian goods end up in the intended hands of beneficiaries, we are creating digital tools that allow real-time tracking and tracing of stock for humanitarian aid organizations.

Problems in the last mile of the humanitarian supply chain complicate work of those trying to help people in need.

WHAT WE ARE FIXING

INEFFECTIVE TRACEABILITY

- Lack of predictability- Quality loss - Poor reporting practices on the field -

LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY

- Poor data resilience - Increased risk of fraud exploiting the lack of digitalization -

LACK OF REAL-TIME VISIBILITY

- Poor stock management - Stock shortages - Waste of resources

_________

Study (PILL) performed after the Haiti earthquake on 2010, shows inadequate management often due to handwritten stock keeping leads to medical material degradation, waste and/or order duplication.

_________

The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) investigation of fraud and corruption found US$ 5 million missing during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, this accounts for 6% of the total IFRC response budget.

_________

NGO's operations and consumption data showed that at least 22 % of all medical items suffered a stock-out during the year, this often live-saving medical aid is found to be at risk 68% and moreover 38% risking expiration.

The normal waiting time for the financial reports from the field offices is around 6 months. This time can be reduced to minutes if there are accurate traceability and shared visibility of the field office actions.

The lack of accountability facilitates fraud and corruption which contributes to the indirect loss of lives of an estimated 140,000 children a year, worsening antimicrobial resistance and the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Between May and November 2011, 19 tons of medicines stored at NGO’s depots, plus those of 92 healthcare facilities, were destroyed after being ‘tampered with’ or because they had passed their expiration dates.
